In last few decades, Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) have made huge impact on industries and Education. ITS is targeted to improve safety and user comfort while driving is administered by VANETs (Vehicular Ad hoc Networks). In VANET, each fast-moving mobile node (vehicles) are provided with communication devices and allowed to exchange various messages between themselves and/or with the roadside infrastructure for sharing traffic and safety information. Congestion Control is the most tackled problem and plays a vital role in the performance of VANETs. Till date, an extensive research is done in the field of Congestion control in VANETs, however, very few of them have addressed the uni-priority of event-driven safety messages in congestion control. In a dense VANET, almost all vehicular nodes broadcast periodic beacon messages at high frequencies and hence Control Channel (CCH) gets easily congested. The all-time availability of CCH is extremely essential for in-time and safe delivery of event-driven safety emergency messages. This paper reviews existing research works in the field of congestion control and concludes with possible future extensions in the field of disseminating uni-priority of event-driven safety messages to solve congestion problems in VANET.
