Abstract Information technology as a corporate function is not only required as an advisor and supporter of all specialist divisions in the transition, but also has to operate the existing technical IT environment cost-efficiently and safely as well as develop itself comprehensively. This challenge requires a “two-speed IT” which uses a holistic IT strategy based on the digitisation roadmap as a basis for its work, and also establishes a method for assessing the benefit aspects of IT for business processes. A “software-defined environment”, i. e. the complete flexibilisation of the IT infrastructure, is the basis for modern microservice-based Apps using Open Source solutions and also for Data Lake projects. Financing can be achieved through successful computing centre consolidation, application harmonisation and standardisation in service provision. The issue of security has a high priority both for business IT and shopfloor- and vehicle IT, however without being an impediment to new initiatives.
