Distracted driving is a major public concern in traffic safety globally. The driving environment has improved with the development of advanced mobile phones, electronic devices, and in-vehicle infotainment (IVI) systems. These technologies bring convenience and comfort to drivers but also pose a significant risk to traffic safety and future transportation systems. Thus, this study was conducted to investigate the current state of distracted driving publications and to provide a clear research direction in this research field. A total of 1,183 publications were retrieved from the Web of Science (WoS) database between 1999 and 2023 by using the bibliometric analysis approach. The worldwide research trends in distracted driving were evaluated based on the co-occurrences of author keywords. The recent research hotspot facilitates the development of an effective Advanced Driver Assistance System for future transportation systems, such as autonomous vehicles (AV), by providing sufficient, dependable, and accurate data pertaining to distracted driving under heterogeneous traffic conditions. The future of this field of study lies in the collection of fundamental data on the causes and effects of distracted driving through naturalistic driving studies, followed by the creation of models.
