Overcrowding in public transportation systems is a pressing concern in many urban centers, particularly in India. The pervasive problem of passengers being forced to stand for the entirety of their journeys, often exacerbated by overcrowding, significantly impacts the overall travel experience. Senior citizens, handicapped individuals, and pregnant women face particular challenges in this regard. By addressing this issue, our research aims to enhance passenger comfort, improve overall satisfaction, and promote the greater utilization of public transportation services. In doing so, it intends to reduce traffic congestion and air pollution, contributing to sustainable urban mobility. This paper outlines the conceptualization, design, and implementation of the Smart Seating Allocation System, detailing the data collection methods, prioritization algorithms, and user interface for passengers and transport authorities. The system employs a pressure pad module consisting of a load cell and an amplifier to determine the occupancy of a seat. Further, this data goes through the seat allocation algorithm to allocate seats to the passengers. Additionally, the final task is to assess the system’s real-world performance through extensive field trials and provide insights into its potential to transform public transport systems into more accessible, efficient, and environmentally friendly modes of travel. By offering a more equitable distribution of seating and prioritizing the needs of vulnerable passenger groups, this research not only improves the quality of life for commuters but also holds promise for a more sustainable and efficient urban transportation landscape in India and beyond.
