Abstract The service delay experienced by the different priority movements at unsignalized intersection in mixed traffic under varying composition of conflicting traffic is studied using simulation technique. Basic curves of service delay for various priority movements are developed for four types of subject vehicles namely passenger car, three wheeler, two wheeler and heavy vehicle facing the conflicting stream of cars. The conflicting traffic stream of passenger cars was also changed later to the stream of cars and one of the remaining three vehicles in its different proportions and the effect on service delay was evaluated. It was found that service delay to a priority movement increases when conflicting traffic stream was of heterogeneous type. An easy to use procedure is suggested for determining the service delay for a type of subject vehicle executing a maneuver, for a given composition of conflicting traffic.
