Abstract In this paper, consensus of multi-agent systems under both determinstic switching agent dynamics and stochastic topology jumps is investigated. The analysis relies on the fact that these two switching signals are independent. First, a necessary and sufficient condition for achieving a consensus under time-invariant agent dynamics and fixed communication topology is presented. Based on this result, the almost sure consensus condition under deterministic switching agent dynamics and stochastic topology jumps is investigated. It is shown that almost sure consensus can be reached if determinstic switching signal satisfies minimum average dwell time constraint.
