The paper describes the method that allows indirect determination of the main characteristics of the process of fuel combustion in the cylinder of a locomotive diesel engine. The method is based on the use of a mathematical model of the working cycle and a model of the equilibrium composition of diesel exhaust gases. Using the method makes it possible to obtain data on the actual condition of locomotive power plants on the basis of an array of data quickly recorded by on-board systems during operation.
