As is the case with all vehicles, the running resistance of rail vehicles must also be overcome in order to make movement possible. For the individual components of the driving resistance, in particular air resistance, bearing friction and rolling resistance, impact resistance, line resistance and acceleration resistance, the physical background is presented and calculation formulas are given. The differences between the driving resistances of motor vehicles and rail vehicles are explained. The numerical magnitudes of the various resistances, their dependence on the driving speed and the influence on performance and energy consumption are also described on the basis of example calculations.
