The paper first demonstrates the high impact of transport for economic welfare and that transport policy in a capitalistic society mainly is a policy of economic growth. The close connection between economic growth and transport growth is the reason for the not sustainable transport development. It will be shown that for a future-oriented transport development we need a modern transport policy focused on the needs of the people. The challenge of a modern transport policy is to act in a strategic and powerful way in supporting the people to be mobile with less transport.
