Road transportation is vital for modern economies, but in recent decades, environmental concerns have risen. In this study, we focus on the main road (E18) connecting two large cities in the Northern Europe, namely Helsinki (Finland) and St. Petersburg (Russia). Main road does not only serve regional consumption, as important seaports and industrial locations exist in the proximity of E18. To improve environmental sustainability and safety on this road, Green Road Map was defined. To test the appropriateness of measures in Green Road Map, a survey for manufacturing and transportation companies was implemented. Initial online survey approached both Finnish and Russian companies in the study region. Results indicate adequateness on Green Road Map for improving road conditions, promoting alternative fuels, and implementing intelligent transport systems (ITSs). However, facilitating transport mode selection is underrepresented in the measures. In addition, relevant data for improving environmental sustainability and safety of road transportation is lacking. ITSs could help with the scarcity of data. Furthermore, analysis of the results shows that the respondents share the sense of urgency towards improving the environmental sustainability of road transportation related to their business.
