The Greater Dublin Area must meet a growing demand for public transport, to cater for an increasing population, while also meeting policy goals for sustainable mobility and climate action. Luas Finglas will be a key component in supporting the planning and development of the Finglas area and provide opportunities to address Dublin’s housing challenges by facilitating compact, ‘transit-orientated’ development. Sustainability is key in the delivery of Luas Finglas. The Project Team, comprising of Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) and our Consultant (Barry Transportation - Egis) have taken a highly innovative approach in the project’s design, specifically: reducing the environmental impact of the project; use of carbon assessment to inform design solutions; adopting the principles of circular economy; the creation of resilient systems that integrate social needs with nature; and providing integrated transport solutions with better linkages between people, places and resources to drive economic activity. The Project Team worked extensively with all project stakeholders from the outset to: communicate the project objectives, which are linked to strategic policy goals; successfully plan and sustainably co-design the project; and maximise opportunities while considering the future needs of the Finglas area.
