This paper presents a method for airport hinterland analysis based on the mobile phone signaling data. Although some empirical research has been performed in the past, the methodology in this paper emphasizes that airport hinterland analysis should be focused on the departing passengers and the data processing flow should be brief as much as possible. The methodology is applied to Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport and proved to be effective. The result shows that the passenger flow of Guangdong Province via Shenzhen Airport in October 2019 was about 1.87 million and the proportion of passengers in Shenzhen was 89%. It also illustrates that the hinterland area of Shenzhen airport mainly located in the surrounding metropolitan areas. The analysis results could provide airport companies with references on the improvement of airport accessibility so as to increase airport competitiveness.
