The value of electricity losses in the traction network is one of the main indicators of the railway transport energy efficiency. When forming the budget of railway companies that own the energy infrastructure of the traction power supply system, it becomes necessary to predict electricity losses for the medium and long term, considering the expected production, technological, climatic and other factors. In this paper the concept of predicting the value of electricity losses for train traction is proposed, the factors influencing the technological and commercial component of losses are established. The most significant factors are the amount of transportation work, the average mass of freight and passenger trains, the average load on the axle of a freight car, the average train speed, the empty run of freight cars, the electric locomotives idling without a locomotive crew, the amount of regenerative energy, the traction network parameters, the expected introduction of energy-saving technologies. It is proposed to determine the coefficients of factors influence on the value of losses on tяhe basis of simulation data with the subsequent formation of second-order regression models. The method for determining a reasonable level of electricity losses has been developed, considering the base and accounting periods conditions. The proposed method has been verified on the existing railway section. The actual level of electricity losses amounted to 13.2% with the forecasted value of 13.3%. This allows to speak about the high efficiency of the proposed method for predicting electricity losses.
