For those readers that wish to refresh their knowledge about the principles of mechanics, the first section of this chapter summarizes associated notions and definitions. This is followed by a description of ship motions and the coordinate systems that are used for this purpose. An introductory description of the forces acting on the underwater body of a sailing yacht is given in Sect. 3.2 and a similar description of the aerodynamic forces on the rig and sails is given in Sect. 3.4. Section 3.3, on the ‘wind triangle’, describes how the ‘apparent wind’ that is experienced by the sails depends on the ‘true’ wind speed and boat speed.
