In this paper, the nonlinear mechanical properties for flexible pipe were obtained through mechanical property tests. Then a multi-scale coupled finite element model was established based on ABAQUS and CATIA in order to accurately simulate the force problems in the winding process of plastic pipe reinforced by cross helically winding steel wires (PSP). The mechanical responses of the PSP during the winding process were simulated effectively on the premise of ensuring calculation accuracy and time efficiency. Besides, the influences of traction force, drum diameter and steel wire number were investigated. The results show that the sectional ovality of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) layer enhances linearly with the increase of traction force and steel wire number, but decreases nonlinearly with the increase of drum diameter; the maximum Mises stress for steel wires increases with the augment of traction force, but decreases with the increase of drum diameter and steel wire number.
