The physical background of flooding simulation is reviewed and a simulation tool, implemented into ship design software, is presented. Focus is on a practical example, flooding of an engine room. The modelling of the equipment and the flooded compartments is presented and some parameters are varied in order to show how to study their effect on the whole flooding process. Benefits of computer aided design of counter flooding arrangements are discussed, with comparisons to the simple rules of thumb.
