Owen Hughes has been teaching ship structures for 50 years – 25 in Sydney, Australia, and 25 at Virginia Tech in the USA. In 2010 he became Emeritus Professor, and he continues to teach full-time and to collaborate in ship structures research. In this paper, he recalls some of the memorable events in his career and some of the many persons who have been involved.
