This paper discusses spacecraft digital control, focusing upon control logic implementation. An introductory section, which describes the general characteristics of spacecraft control systems, is followed by a discussion specialized to digital control. Approaches to control law implementation are considered, with emphasis on programmable control electronics (which can be a device designed specifically for control application or a more sophisticated general purpose flight computer). Finally, a programmable control electronic assembly under development at TRW is described; with particular emphasis upon the design requirements, criteria, and tradeoffs applied in configuring this control processor.
