The American Hot Dip Galvanizers Association has reported that a comprehensive research project on the use of galvanized reinforcing steel in concrete bridge decks has progressed to the construction of experimental decks in five bridges over the new I-96 Freeway in Detroit. Galvanized bars were placed in the top mat over approximately half the deck in each of the five new bridges. The aim being "to determine the effectiveness of galvanizing the top reinforcing bars as a means to prevent fracture-plane deterioration'.
