This paper presents the definition of high performance ballistic reentry vehicle heatshield thermodynamic performance evaluation in the terms of the thermodynamic properties and their required accuracy for the Advanced Ballistic Reentry Systems (ABRES) program, a description of the types of instruments required to obtain the thermodynamic properties, i. e., temperature-time and surface-recession-time histories, as well as the number and distribution of these instruments as a function of vehicle size and mission objectives, the detailed physical description of each instrument type with special emphasis on thermocouples and the effects of instrument design, construction, manufacturing, and installation on the acquired data and examples of actual flight test data that demonstrate these effects and the program management aspects involved in the selection of specific instruments to meet specific mission objectives.
