Acceptance criteria and non-destructive testing (NDT) procedures for weldments in liquefied natural gas (LNG) tanks in ships have been established. The significance of welding defects is analysed in the light of safety against fatigue and unstable fracture. Fracture toughness and fatigue crack propagation test results from laboratory and production testing are used in the evaluation of acceptance criteria. Size and type of a number of microscopically examined production weld defects have been compared with ultrasonic test results.
