A highly successful conference was held in London during July with the object of reporting the results of recent research, and discussing their application to the ultimate load design of structures fabricated from steel plate. The main effort was directed towards reporting the results of the research carried out on plate and box girders both abroad and at home, to check the validity of the more controversial Merrison Rules imposed on bridge designers after the box girder bridge mishaps a few years ago at Koblenz, Yarra and Milford Haven. Particular attention was devoted to the effect of geometrical imperfections on component strength.
