During construction and laying of undersea pipelines, a thorough and rapid inspection of the welded joints is essential before they leave the pipe-laying vessel because of the cost of any subsequent repairs. An automatic ultrasonic testing system for these welds has been developed by Roentgen Technische Dienst (RTD) of The Netherlands. The system, designated Rotoscan-77, is essentially a 'spin-off' development of RTD's nuclear vessel inspection system, and is claimed to have considerable advantages over X-ray inspection in some situations.
