In response to the requirements of this energy-saving age, Hitachi, Ltd. at an early date set about developing chopper control equipment for electric cars and, to date, has manufactured and supplied numerous chopper control systems incorporating improvement upon improvement. The chopper system of the series commitation type using reverse-conducting thyristors was developed as the standard system for 1500 V DC electric cars. The series commutation type chopper, which has a simple circuit construction, has contributed immensely to size and weight reduction. By adding automatic train operation function and monitoring function to the chopper control equipment, it has been developed into a control system indispensable to modern electric cars.
