The electric power source in automobile is a low voltage battery (6 or 12 V). But one circuit requires high voltage components, the ignition circuit. Electronic ignition circuits using transistors or thyristors were developed several years ago but never appeared in very large quantities, because of the failure of the semiconductors to operate satisfactorily at high voltages. TAG Semiconductors Limited has developed a planar high voltage thyristor, which combines good stability at high voltage, and high peak current capability, together with a large power gain.
