To handle the ever-increasing number of vehicles, centralized traffic control systems are being used for efficient operation of city expressways. The Hanshin Expressway Public Corporation has installed the world's first optical fiber communication system for traffic control. This system uses the latest long-wavelength (1.3 microm) optical fiber communication technology to transmit PCM signals at 5.3 Mbits/s through a 35 km repeaterless transmission line.
