Hybrids offer a lot of advantages and can be brought to use in a multitude of automotive applications. The optimal design approach is to start from scratch and to define the system around the hybrid constraints to as great an extent as possible. The interfaces between the major circuit components have to be optimized in an interactive effort to achieve the most cost effective solution. This requires in house capabilities of systems, components and hybrid facilities. The higher development expense and longer development time of this integrated approach require large production volumes and a long product life to make it economical. The performance, testing, reliability and process capabilitiy aspects have to be considered at each step of the development cycle to obtain a quality product. The design and manufacturing process has to be taylored to the environmental stress conditions as illustrated by the two examples.
