A programm is presented to change the image of the electric vehicle to that of a refined and reliable mode of transportation. Current electric vehicle test procedures and resultant performance data are discussed. These serve as a basis for a new approach that involves acquiring compressed performance data during extensive testing. This will make possible confident selection of appropriate battery-vehicle combinations for real applications. A new microprocessor based data acquisition and compression system with sensors makes this practical. Several system sensors are described. System hardware and software have been designed to present data and information in conventional terms that are acceptable, for both test track and actual on road data gathering, reduction, and information storage. This approach can characterize vehicle performance, failure modes, drivers, temperatures, application parameters, terrain and real time charge data and discharge power profiles.
