As a result of the growth in projected power requirements in space, nuclear reactor powerplants are becoming of increasing interest. Thermionic conversion is a prime candidate for converting nuclear heat into electricity. The feasibility of thermionic reactors has been demonstrated in the Soviet Union. Within recent years, a technology base on converters, heat pipes and electrical insulation has been developed which is relevant to out-of-core thermionic reactors.
