A vehicle classification equipment has been developed. It has the capability to distinguish a vehicles following one after another, to count the number of axles, to measure width and step position of a wheel and to classify vehicles using the above data. An axle grouping device, which separates a vehicle from another, has a high resolution to distinguish vehicles connected with a rod of more than 50 mm as a group of vehicle. It is designed not to be affected so much by widely variable weather conditions. A wheel sensor, which counts the number of axles and measures a width or a position of a wheel, has features to operate without chattering, with high resolution because it applies P.C.R. as a swiching material. The quipment has been tested for one year at the Tomei Express Way and proved it could be put into practical use. It has been adopted as a sensing device of the new toll collection system of the JHPC.
