In the past year, three single-mode transmission experiments have demonstrated that this technology is practical for undersea cable applications at 274 Mb/s. Laboratory experiments with single repeater spans have achieved 101-km repeater spacing at 274 Mb/sec. Timing jitter accumulation simulations indicate that an intercontinental transmission system can have acceptable jitter accumulation given proper attention to timing circuit design. In addition an extensive deep sea trial has demonstrated the practicality of deploying such systems in deep ocean waters.
