The structure of missile guidance autopilots, navigation and signal processing systems have changed significantly as electronic technology has evolved. In the 1960's, analog integrated circuits, solid state RF ocsillators, and compact microwave circuits paved the way for monopulse guidance units, representing a significant departure from the previous conical scan standard. During the 1970's, digital technology began its emergence in autopilot and navigation subsystems and in signal processing when compact FET's became available. This development combined with high speed analog to digital converters makes the missile borne pipelined digital processor typical for the 1980's. Today we find the digital processor interface moving ever closer to the RF microwave front end in RF sensors and closer to the detector for E/O and IR sensors.
