Each electronic warfare system seems to have unique test equipment. This proliferation of support equipment is costly as provisioning, sparing, training, and maintenance is different for each different test system. The question is, does the user need to put up with a lack of standardization to provide effective EW support? A potential solution is generic EW testing, that is, having multiple and varied types of electronic warfare systems tested on a common automatic test system. Generic EW testing would obviously be desirable for reduced acquisition costs, reduced sparing, reduced training, etc. The question is, what would a generic EW tester be? EW systems come in a wide variety of configurations. For example, there are radar warning receivers, deceptive jammers and power management systems. Each different type of EW system has a different set of test requirements. A generic EW test system must be able to accomodate all of these different requirements. There also are issues raised strictly for a test system to be generic. For example, a generic tester must be modular to accomodate new technologies and replace obsolete resources. These issues will fold into the requirements for the generic EW test system.
