Design concepts and potential missions for unmanned, long-endurance, high-altitude powered platforms (HAPPs) have been presented. Based on enabling technologies now maturing, this new class of airplanes is envisioned as performing monitoring missions over periods of 2-3 days to months, beginning as early as the 1990's. Of particular value to agricultural interests, the long-endurance capability allows for repetitive or continuous monitoring of crop lands to enable near-real-time farm management decisions to be made. The potential economic impact of such capability appears to be substantial.
