Scientific requirements vary greatly but at IOS the era of sampling to 'see what's there' or to 'obtain a general picture' is over; all branches of oceanographic science are now concerned with the finer scale of the deep sea both in time and space; qualitative studies have largely given way to quantitative and life cycle studies. To implement the new studies has required considerable improvements in the relative accuracy of real time navigation in the Deep Sea; this paper describes some IOS approaches to solving the problems with respect to seabed samplers.
