This paper discusses electromagnetic threats to aircraft (intrasystem and intersystem elecromagnetic interference (EMI), static electrification, lightning, and the high-altitude electromagnetic pulse (HEMP)). It reviews pertinent military standards and specifications which establish requirements and verification methods, discusses protection measures and techniques, compares the shielding properties of carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP) with aluminium-skinned aircraft, discusses significant aircraft electromagnetic protection programs.
