With the advent of increasingly complex antennas, the problems of characterising RF performance of satellite antenna and payload systems assume great importance. Responding to this need, the ESA, early '82, carried out an inhouse assessment of test requirements of satellite payload systems over the next 20 years or so. This exercise established that a very large compact range antenna test (CATR) would serve the purpose, and that such a facility should be ideally located at ESTEC as an integral element of the overall environmental test complex. These considerations were subsequently presented in a seminar to industry (in Sept. 82) to solicit their views and to learn what industry itself planned to do in this context of payload testing. It became clear from this dialogue with industry that adequate test ranges (with increasing trend towards near-field scanning types) existed, or were at planning stages, for testing of relative small (2 m) antennas and simple payloads but these facilities would be inadequate for large multibeam antennas, and Ariane 4 class payloads (comparable to OLYMPUS satellite), where the real time capability of a large CATR is essential.
