The paper provides first a brief history of electronic engine controls in Europe. The shares of various engine control systems within the total European car production are shown. Some present systems are briefly described, especially a cylinder-selective closed-loop knock control system with added turbo-charger control. The paper then deals with the future emission standards in Europe and with some new developments. As examples, two highly integrated electronic control units, one for fuel injection and for electronic ignition, are shown. Finally, a brief outlook on the future of electronic engine control in Europe is given.
