This paper describes a joint development which incorporates a Weber S.P.A. idle speed control concept in a unique electronic control module developed by Motorola AIEG for Ford Motor Company Limited. Discussed are specific points relating to system concept, control strategy, hardware design, manufacturing and testing techniques. The use of an industry standard microcomputer provided an easy introduction for engineering staff and the availability of development support equipment allowed extreme flexibility in the control functions performed. The introduction of this system is believed to be a world first for Ford, there are no known similar packages which incorporate the control of the ignition and carburettor functions, together with a fully electronic pressure transducer and coil driver stage, in an under-hood installation.
