This paper describes the design of ANALYST II, an expert system for monitoring and assessing tactical intelligence on the modern battlefield. ANALYST II correlates and aggregates reports from intelligence sources, responds to intelligence requests from command centers of differing echelons, monitors the situation to adjust for incomplete, incorrect, and changing information, and justifies its intelligence findings. The contributions of this research are: a knowledge-based architecture combining data-driven procedural rules and goal-driven propositional rules, a method of limiting forward chaining of data, geographically-focused inferencing, and evidential reasoning with a hierarchical spatial representation tailored to the military domain.
