Emission control systems which rely on a single bed three-way catalytic converter, need oxygen sensors that perform consistently even at low exhaust gas temperatures for 80000 kilometers or more. A heated thick-fim titania oxygen sensor with proven engine durability has been developed. The sensor consists of a porous titania film applied to one side of an alumina support substrate with a thick film heater on the opposite side. The principles of operation, sensor characteristics, engine durability test results, the control of the air/fuel ratio over a wide range of exhaust temperatures, and application recommendations are discussed.
