Current military helicopters provide one of the most severe and testing working environments known to man. In conditions where they are exposed to extreme examples of environmental factors commonly supposed to deleteriously affect performance, aircrew are required to perform complex combinations of difficult tasks. Far from improving with the continuing development of helicopters and extension of the military roles played by helicopters the working environment provided for helicopter aircrew is becoming even more severe with time. Current trends towards helicopters of higher performance, lower crew numbers and a greater number of electronic processing systems of ever increasing sophistication are combining to seriously exacerbate the problems.
