In 1978 the authors and their colleagues published in the AUTOTESTCON proceedings, a definitive overview and definition of ATE System Architecture technology. Since that time, the state-of-the-art of ATE technology has advanced at a dizzying pace. The Navy has undertaken the Consolidated Avionic Support System. The Air Force has developed the Mate FSD baseline and is now undertaking additional system development initiatives. The Army is making steady progress in their IFTE and universal pin electronics development programs. The commercial ATE industry has advanced the state-of-the-art in both In-circuit and In-circuit/Functional ATE system development. The integrations of design and test as well as the application of AI technology has been discussed at great lengths in the literature and at conferences in the ATE community. This paper will provide on overview analysis of ATE System Architectures which have emerged or are contemplated in current military and commercial initiatives. New innovative architectures made possible by technological evolution will be identified and discussed in terms of their effect on doing work (i.e. testing). The impact of parallel computer system architectures on test and the system architectures will also be addressed.
