The aim of our research program at Texas Technical University is to undertake systematic studies of insulators, particularly, their aging behavior under simulated orbital environmental conditions. An extensive literature survey indicates that so called 'accelerated aging' techniques have not been applied to a very wide range of materials or stress factors. The synergistic effects of stresses are not understood. Information on insulators available from the electric power industry indicates a poor record of success in predicting lifetimes and reliability of materials.
