An innovative, route finding method has been developed which enables ground vehicle path planning across potentially hostile terrain. Routes are generated with the support of artificial intelligence techniques. Color displays of the route along any location of interest are being developed to provide for both top-down and perspective views enabling a direct correlation between views. The applicability of the concept has been successfully demonstrated through analysis of realistic scenarios and generation of representative color views and displays. The technique results in realistic routes over a network of roads and off-road regions. Route selection criteria include tradeoffs among transit speeds, threat laydown including terrain masking effects, and intervisibility effects when threat locations are highly uncertain. This paper explains the pertinent concepts to automatic path planning, display generation, and vehicle modelling. The engineering feasibility of this technique is discussed with emphasis on providing extremely rapid feedback to the user of the system.
