The Shinkansen EMU (electric multiple unit) train Series 100 has come on the scene as the new rolling stock of the 20-year old Tokaido and Sanyo Shinkansen lines. Based on the experimental results of the Tokaido, Sanyo, Tohoku and Joetsu Shinkasen lines, various new '21st Century' techniques have been incorporated. Compared with conventional vehicles, the rolling stock is designed to provide speed, riding comfort, compact and lightweight construction, and energy and labor savings. Concrete features include an increase of the maximum speed from 210 km/h to 230 km/h, double decker design of the dining car and 'green' (first class) car, introduction of private room 'green' cars, extra seats and renewed interior decorations. The main circuit system is similar to that of Shinkansen EMU train Series 200. By making the psophometric disturbing current Jp identical to that of EMU train Series 0, the number of mixed bridges of the main silicon controlled rectifier can be reduced from six (as in Series 200) to four; and due to the adoption of large capacity semiconductors, the construction is lightweight. The rheostatic brake is the cam shaft control type, the same as the Shinkansen EMU train Series 0. A series of performance tests carried out between Tokyo and Hakata have confirmed the intended performance of this EMU train, and from late autumn of 1986, full commercial operation has been carried out.
