Moonshine was an airborne device which allowed a single aircraft to simulate, on the enemy's radar, a large formation of aircrafts, thereby diverting defensive action away from a real formation. Three versions are described: a British one from 1942, a U.S. Navy version from 1942, and the AN/APQ-15 from 1943 which featured and ultrasonic liquid delay line to produce an output which was coherent with the input, following it in both amplitude and frequency. Convention currents in the liquid caused the output waveform to 'breathe'in the same manner as the radar return from a large formation. 200 of these were produced during the war.
