Describes the solar cell arrays currently in use in space vehicles to supplement dwindling existing power supplies. The structure and operation of the most common array-a silicon cell generator with a large active surface and a p-n junction fractions of a micron thick-aredescribed as well as alternative methods of installing the array, either rotating about its own axis or in orientatable panels adjusted mechanically. The need for the accumulation of electrical energy in the solar cells is explained and illustrated in the case of a microwave telecommunications satellite which spends 2 periods each year in the Earth's shadow of the Sun where no solar energy reaches the cells.
