Fifty years after Soviet Railways commenced electrification, the pace of technical innovation is faster than ever, and reliability of equipment has greatly improved in the past decade. Autotransformer feeding on a.c. lines and the use of 6 kV d.c. are now seen as necessary if 10000 tonne trains are to become general.
