Vehicle headlights have been important in road safety since motoring began. Headlamp development has been chiefly concerned with improving the dipped beam; today's headlamps are optically and mechanically refined but in basic principles have remained the same for several decades. Two different beam patterns have evolved; performance even under ideal conditions is inadequate and in practice it is far below the ideal. The optimum vehicle lighting for lit roads is now recognized to be a large area lamp with intensity intermediate between sidelights and present dipped headlights. Various proposals are discussed. For unlit roads in the long term conventional systems will have to give way to new techniques such as polarization or the adoption of variable beam systems responsive to the changing road scene ahead.
